Florence in the Snow

Back to the recent holiday escapades. After Rome we went up to Florence for a couple of nights. We got quite a snowstorm while we were there, and our place of lodging had a sweet terrace from which to digitize it.

In the first shot you can see the Duomo and Campanile. My brother and I climbed up Brunelleschi's dome into the lantern one day while the ladies were, ahem, shopping. It provided some awesome views of the city, and also had a couple of galleries on the inside from which you could get a good view of the church's flooring and Vasari's dome-paintings.

In this second pic you can see, among other things, the tower of the Palazzo Vecchio, a building designed by Arnolfo di Cambio.

I don't know why snow in Italy contradicts my imaginings, but it does. But the pictures are stunning. Are most of the smaller buildings in the view single story? Everything looks so squat in comparison to the dome. You lucky ducks. . .

Yeah, snow in Italy also contradicted the cracks in the bottoms of my shoes. But once you get a little ways north of Rome, they can get some 'weather', if you know what I mean. I still haven't seen a single flakelet in Rome, though every once in a while I think they can get a little snow--still, in the winter as during the rest of the year Rome's preferred form of precipitation is good ol' rain.

Most of those smaller buildings are actually 3 or 4 stories, I think, but the Duomo is still the tallest structure in Florence--the church like a sentinel still watches over the surrounding landscape. How's that for a simile? Anyway, the dome is SO big, it dwarfs most of the normal-sized buildings.
